SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea) requirements are describing that Verified Gross Mass (VGM) of the transported overseas cargo must be known. In practice the mass of the containers to be loaded to container ships must be known. The requirement has already been in force since July 1, 2016. However it seems that this isn’t familiar for every company who is shipping their goods and still there are shipped freight overseas without accurate weight information.
In many cases the most cost competitive solution is to determine the weight of the dispatched goods already in the production line. This doesn’t require additional time and the weighing can be done by a scale which has been integrated part of the manufacturing process. This kind of goods are for example steel coils, timber or plywood, chemical containers, bulk material sacks etc. Beside of weighing for SOLAS purposes the company will get also valuable additional information for their own production process or enterprise resource planning (ERP). The scales used for the purpose must be commercially verified according to relevant standards and regulations.
Lahti Precision has supplied a number of SOLAS scales for Nordic and Baltic customers. All the scales have been engineered and supplied according to EN type approval FI17.MI.006.05. The most convenient way for the customers is to take contact to Lahti Precision experts who are able to tell which matters must be considered when planning to invest in SOLAS approved scale. The best end result is achieved when our engineer is visiting the customer’s production plant and is getting familiar to the process requirements which are tried to achieve. It will be then considered whether the scale is integrated to conveyor which may require modifications of the original conveyor structure or is it enough that the scale will be positioned just beside or after the production line as its own entity. Getting rough sketches drawn on site Lahti Precision sales will be able to give budgetary offer for supplying the scale fitting for the purpose.
Delivery time for typical SOLAS approved scale is a few months from the order. All the scales are engineered carefully for fitting for the purpose. The used mechanical and electrical components are high quality European ones. All the scales are typically connected to local customer’s factory automation system. In addition the scales can be connected to mScales weighing service provided by Lahti Precision Oy.
